Larry Krystkowiak is seriously considering starting Dan Gadzuiric at the power forward position this season, according to Gery Woefel. That’s a interesting idea. I think that Gadzuric has too much trouble staying out of foul trouble to really make it work (his foul rate over the last two seasons of .18 per minute means that on average he would foul out of every game in 33 minutes), but I like that Krystkowiak is interested in considering different options.
I always felt that Gadzuric was mishandled by Terry Stotts, who forced him to play center and only as as center. Despite being listed at 6′11″, I highly doubt that Danny G is really that tall, and he’s actually kind of thin to play in the middle. He should have been playing power forward in the right matchups all along, but Stotts wouldn’t let him. Late in the season two years ago, after Bogut had hit the rookie wall, I could never understand why Stotts wouldn’t let Gadzuric play alongside Magloire for a few minutes at a time. What’s so bad about having your two best rebounders on the floor at the same time?
Don’t get me wrong — I’m aware that Gadzuric had a horrendous season last year. But he had shot between 52.5% and 55% the previous 3 seasons before last years’ 47% slump. That looks like a fluke number to me, he can bounce back. It seemed like he mishandled an inordinate number of dunk and tip attempts, which should sort itself out. Hopefully playing at the 4 a little will jump-start his game this year.
I can’t imagine he will start at the 4, but I think that he may actually be better there than in the middle.
