“How old are you, Yi?” … “No comment.” … I love it!!!

October 4th, 2007 by Brett Boyer · No Comments

Well, you gotta hand it to Yi. One practice in and he’s already pretty much put to bed the question of his age; giving the old, “I have no comment” answer to a question about whether he is 19 or 22 years old.

It’s not necessarily his fault that he’s been lying all this time about his year; kids from countries all around the world have their ages fudged by government sports agencies because they place a lot of stock in the under-21 world championships of various sports. But at least Yi came as close to telling the truth as he could now. Besides, what can Yi say to a question like that? If he says he’s 19 people it placates some people but others (including me) assume he’s lying; if he says he’s 22 it causes big problems back home.

In other news, the ESPN article goes to great lengths to try to find positives from Yi’s first practice, pointing out that he is jetlagged and that he looked really good on one posession. Yeah, well, I birdied two holes last time I played golf … watch out PGA Tour!

Leave it to Andrew Bogut to make a really good point about Yi (and build in an excuse for him) that with the amount of playing he’s done this offseason, he will probably hit the “rookie wall” earlier than most.

Well, hopefully Yi can find the inner strength at (no comment) years of age to blow through that wall!
