Jamaal Magloire Is Tough?

July 18th, 2007 by Jeramey Jannene · 2 Comments

Jamaal Magloire, who I love to hate, is telling people that he brings “toughness” to the New Jersey Nets that he doesn’t see often in the NBA. Apparently that year with Darius Miles and Zach Randolph in Portland got to his head, the Trail Blazers should trade Miles before he messes with Greg Oden’s head.

Jamaal Magloire should not be allowed to arrive with him any team and talk about improving them after that terrible post-combination he created with him and then rookie Andrew Bogut.

Don’t get too bent out of shape over this; Magloire is correct in this instance. He brings plenty of toughness.

Last year Magloire was 25th best in the league in rebounds per minute and for the beginning of the 2005 season the Bucks led the league in rebound margin. He was by far the best rebounder on the team, and you have to be pretty tough for that.

The problem is that his hands are too tough to hold onto a pass and he’s so immobile that it’s tough for him to stay out of foul trouble.

He’s exactly correct — he’d tough. Which is a euphamism for big and not too talented.

He might be fat enough to grab boards, but I don’t think his toughness has anything to do with that. When I think tough I think scary on defense and aggressive on the boards, Magloire is just so huge that he clears a lot of space.

Magloire is about as not-tough as you can get on defense. Stats might not expose how often he gets it taken to him in the post by agile big men.
